The Pros I Would Pay to See- Corey Krupa
Many people have different opinions about who they would pay top dollar to see live. Some people want to simply see top athletes that are well known figures such as Tom Brady, LeBron James, and Miguel Cabrera. Others are diehard fans and would only like to see their current or past legendary star athletes perform live. However, I found that when people discuss which female athletes they would pay to see live some of the responses are more based on sex appeal. In the Sports Illustrated poll that we discussed in class several athletes wanted to see Serena Williams because of her "tight outfit" that she wears. In our general class discussion a lot of people responded with females that are typically portrayed in a more sexual way such as Alex Morgan, Danica Patrick, and Hope Solo. In my opinion, female athletes are well known not just because of their talents but also because of sex appeal. Being an attractive female in the sports world is more marketable especially since the main consumers are men. If women's sports want to continue to grow then they need more endorsement deals and if star female athletes like Alex Morgan, Danica Patrick, and Serena Williams continue to dominate then that is a great thing for their sports. Sports fans love seeing amazing athletes dominate like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Mariano Riviera. I feel that some of the most popular women’s sports are tennis, swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball. These are all Olympic events where people can cheer for their Country and these are all sports where the United States teams typically do well in. People love to see their Country win especially in America.

Corey,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that women in sports are not just judged based on their ability but also sex appeal. I think that this is the overall opinion. However, I don't believe it is the case for every person that follows different women in sports. I think the reason I really admire athletes like Jenny Finch and Alex Morgan is because of their talent and the overwhelming amount of impact they have had on their respective sports.

Women’s sports are in an incredibly difficult position. Not only do the leagues have difficulty staying afloat, but the athletes themselves must find ways to market themselves. So many female athletes are forced into using their sex appeal in order to gain attention, yet this sometimes detracts attention from their athletic abilities. The media really dictates what happens in women’s sports. So many news outlets, magazines and websites will only publish stories about female athletes when it pertains to their bodies. Until TV shows, magazines, and segments of websites are dedicated to the actual sporting side of women’s athletics, it will be very difficult for these sports to gain any traction. While the WNBA may be the most recognizable women’s sports in today’s world, it is miniscule in comparison to the “big four” of men’s sports. The WNBA and other women’s sports need to take a stand and find a way to encourage more coverage of the athletics and not just the modeling and posing.
