Introduction: Ben Mathey

Hi everyone. My name is Ben Mathey and I am currently in my senior year. I have the fall and spring semesters and then an internship in the summer before I graduate. I am from a suburb of Youngstown, Ohio and came to BG for the sport management program. I am currently working on my practicum for Jim Elsasser, the Associate Athletic Director in charge of Internal Affairs. I am working game operations for football and men's and women's soccer as well as going into my third year as a building staff member at the Stroh Center. This past summer I did an internship for no school credit at the Western & Southern Open, a professional tennis tournament in Cincinnati. I worked for the logistics staff and we handled all of the shipping/receiving of merchandise, equipment and any other shipments that came to the site. I also managed vendor relations for 14 local restaurants that had booths set up at the tournament. My ultimate goal is to be the director of game operations for an NFL team and I will make it there.

If I had a chance to watch any female athlete, I would choose Serena Williams and I actually did get to watch and meet her while working the tennis tournament this summer. She is a dominant athlete and has the skills to beat any female tennis player in the world. She is also outspoken and controversial so she makes for good entertainment off the court. If I could choose any male athlete I would choose Usain Bolt. The man is a freak and I don't really have any other words to describe him. He just dominates the competition and he may be the greatest track athlete of all time.

As far as this semester goes, I am excited to dive into some controversial topics and I'm excited to meet and work with all of you throughout the semester. I hope we get into some heated discussions and really look at how gender roles are defined in sport and how they are challenged in sport. Overall, I think it will be a fun and challenging semester and I'm ready to work hard and have some fun.
