Don Imus Scandal - Corey Krupa
When I first heard the comments that Don Imus made about the Rutgers Women's basketball team I sadly was not surprised that someone thinks that way. However, I was surprised that someone with as much power as Don Imus made those types of remarks. He obviously should have never made those statements because he needed to serve as a role model instead. These types of racist remarks should never be tolerated even if you are just an everyday person. The comments were not only racist but other sexist. Why should a man like Don Imus care about how female athletes look? The Rutgers Women’s basketball team and their University did not need that type of negative publicity. I feel like issue such as racism and sexism will never go away around the world or in this country. Unfortunately, some older people in America are set in their stubborn ways and will not change their racist or sexist mindset. However, I feel like the younger generations of America have a better perspective on issues such as racism and sexism. America will never be perfect and these types of issues will never go away. I feel like we are heading towards a better place and we cannot let the thoughts of a few individuals in the entire population bring us down. Don Imus was the only person out of thousands of radio hosts that work every day to say those cruel remarks. That racism, sexism, and negativity will always exist. We need to look at the positives and appreciate how far our society has come in the last 50 years.

Corey,
ReplyDeleteI like how you noted how you were surprised that a person with such power would make remarks like the ones Don Imus made. I think that sometimes the people with the most power are the ones who usually make remarks like this because they feel that perhaps they are invincible or that their opinions will be protected by their fans or following. I think Don Imus had these thoughts and that is why he made the hurtful and racist comments that he did. I also agree with the remarks that the younger generation today is different from the older generation. I think that the younger generation is more tolerant and empathic to everyone and that is very different from the older generation that tends to have people with many biases.

Don Imus deserved every bit of the consequences that he faced for his comments. There is no place in sports or in the world in general for those types of racist and sexist remarks. Sport media today, however, pushes the envelope at times in terms of what is said about race. On shows like ESPN First Take, they seem to push the race card as much as possible which sets their hosts up for disaster. It was no surprise to me when Rob Parker made the comments that he did about Robert Griffin III. Sport Media in general and companies like ESPN in particular need to address these issue, but need to make sure that they are approaching them in a thoughtful manner. If issues are addressed appropriately, then media can cover controversial topics without coming off as offensive.
